University Library
What is it? For most social science disciplines. APA citation style is the preferred format for listing sources mentioned in scholarly papers.
It is described in the Publication manual of the American
Psychological Association (APA manual), available in the library's reference and reserve collections.
Why is it required?
It is essential that scholars giver proper credit to research they have
consulted, and to be able to cross-check and build upon each other's works. Readers
of a research paper need to have clear information about the sources cited by the author to be able to consult
these sources themselves. By utilizing a consistent format for citing sources, readers can quickly
identify interesting works and retrieve them from a library.
Where is it used?
In a scholarly paper, make a clear reference in the text of the paper each time another person's work is cited,
usually by inserting the author's surname and the year of the work in parentheses. (See
Citations in Text.) Make sure to cite all appropriate work to avoid
plagiarism. At the end of the text, include a list of all works
referenced. (See Reference List).
