Selected Past Displays 2008 Warrior Book Collection Contest Award Winners (May, 2008) Congratulations to the winners of the 2008 Warrior Book Collection Contest! This display highlights our winners, their entries, and provides samples of their winning collections. Poetry Chapbooks of the 1960's (April, 2008) For National Poetry month, Special Collections has on display in the West Reading Room works from the 1960s (considered a time of renaissance for poetry) that utilized an old format: chapbooks. Chapbooks are a genre of pocket-size booklets, many of which are bound with paper covers and contain few pages. These books, whose origins date back to the 16th century, had a resurgence of popularity in the 1960's among poets. This display features several chapbooks, dating from the 60's, from notable poets such as Michael McClure, Josephine Miles, Paul Goodman, and more. Sierra Nevada: the John Muir Trail. (December, 2007) Special Collections has on display in the West Reading Room its 2006 limited edition of Ansel Adams’ 1938 masterpiece. He originally produced the book with fifty of his High Sierra photographs to honor the opening of the John Muir Trail and to commemorate the death of Walter Starr, Jr. Designed and produced by the Arion Press, the new edition has handset types; all cotton fiber paper; letterpress printing; and the photographic plates were individually tipped in by hand. iPods & iPhones… E-Resources at Your University Library (November, 2007) Has Apple's iPod come to represent "Coolness" as Steven Levy asserts in The Perfect Thing: How the iPod Shuffles Commerce, Culture, and Coolness? Apple's technologies certainly seem to have had permeated student life and American culture and set the standard for digital music players. With the introduction of the iPhone, Apple is arguably redefining cell phone technology and the capabilities of portable personal devices. Books available via the Univeristy Library can be used to, among many other things, help you to become better acquainted with your Apple devices. Several representations of available E-books are depicted in the display case. Also, find out more about how technology is shaping culture by accessing newspaper and journal articles through your Library's E-Collections. Television (November, 2007) In coordination with the University’s consideration of a degree program in film and TV studies, the University Library reviewed its holdings of materials in these fields. That examination revealed that the Library offers an array of resources, including electronic books and journals, exploring themes surrounding the mediums of film and television. This display illustrates research materials exploring the fascinating and complex medium so prevalent in our day to day existence, television. The items presented may someday support students in pursuit of degrees in film and TV studies, but they are available to you now at your University Library. Your Library… Your Achievement. Welcome! 50 years of Stanislaus. (September, 2007) WELCOME... it began 50 years ago. A welcome back to school display showing the development of CSUS, from a college to a university. The display features a chronology of the university's early years with photos and a variety of other Stanislaus materials including yearbooks and newspapers. October is Archives Month in California. (October, 2007) On display in the Galloway Reading Room are materials from the Library Special Collections that showcase the 2007 theme, "Traveling t hrough California" : a 1913 edition of California tourist guide and handbook: an 1874 edition of California, a book for travellers and settlers; 1870 editions of Nelsons pictorial guides; and small facsimiles of travel posters from Southern California, 1896 - 1965. Books on a Smaller Scale (August, 2007) A library exhibit currently on view in the Galloway Reading Room. Books, like people, come in all different sizes. This display spotlights books published in a s maller scale taken from the library's Special Collections. Examples show the variety of subjects published in "small" format: in cluding "miniature books," often defined as books of 3 inches in height or less, as well as such other small and portable titles as The Yosemite Guide-book (1874) with a fold-out map, tales of Beatrix Potter, The Book of Common Prayer, Quo tations from Chairman Mao Tse Tung, The Little Red Schoolbook. and many more. 2007 Summer Reading Title: Land without Time (July 2007) This display focuses on the book Land without Time, the University's Summer Reading selection for 2007. The book is written by John Sumser and describes some of his experiences as a Peace Co rps volunteer in Afghanistan prior to and during the communist coup of 1979. Film (July, 2007) DVD rentals, box office grosses, lists of top 100 movies, and your friends quoting lines from popular movies~E This time of year reminds one of how pervasive film is in our culture. Taken further, it's astonishing to consider the layers that shape this reality. Genres... Documentary films, B-films, musicals, action-adventure films, horror films Celebrations of film... annual film festivals Mediums for the viewing of film... Movie theaters, Muliplexes, DVDs And outcomes... Movies stars, celebrity obsessed culture The materials in this display draw out these themes and remind you that your Warrior Card is your all-access ticket to exploring the movies that shape your life. Images of Yosemite in the Library's Collection (July 2007) Yosemite in Time:| Ice Ages, Tree Clocks, Ghost Rivers by Mark Klett, Rebecca Solnit & ; Byron Wolfe is the featured book on display in the Galloway Reading Room. Images of Yosemite that are current replications (the exact location, time of day and year) of previ ous photographs by Eadweard Muybridge, Edward Weston, and Ansel Adams are side-by-side aspects of this book. A unique present-time color panoramic view of Yosemite with inserts of century old images is also on display. The materials are from the Library's Special Collections. CELEBRATIONS!!! (May, 2007) This display has a variety of books and photos that help you get into the spirit of summer fun. Enjoy the summer celebration starting off in J une with college graduation, where we celebrate graduates across the country receiving their diplomas. In July, have a family BBQ and watch the fireworks as we honor America~Rs b irthday and our independence~E.Fourth of July. Finally, in August, sit back and watch a nice game of Baseball~EAmerica~Rs Pastime. August marks the anniversary of the first tel evised game of Major League Baseball. At the end of the month, watch your favorite Little Leaguers all across the nation take part in the Little League Word Series. Celebrating Women in Politics (March, 2007) This display highlights just a few of the women who have made significant contributions to politics and government in the Unite d States. Included are Madeleine Albright, Sandra Day O'Connor, Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, Diane Feinstein, Gloria Steinem, Condoleezza Rice, Shirley Chisholm, Barbara Jorda n and Eleanor Roosevelt. March is National Women's History Month! Meet Our Military... Past and Present (March, 2007) Focusing on the people of our military, this display features a variety of young soldiers' stories and experiences. Magazines, photographs a nd books help demonstrate the diversity of those individuals who have served in our military, both past and present. Women as Educators: In the Central Valley (February, 2007) Honoring National Women's History Month, this is a display of notable women educators of the Central Valley. Many of the featured women had schools named after them for their contributions to education and their community. The display, viewable in the Galloway Reading Room, includes: photos, articles, the Stanislaus Stepping Stones, and school Registers and Reports of 1893 and 1903. Spring 2007 Events: Salazar Reading and Warrior Book Contest (February, 2007) The University Library is proud to sponsor two events during spring 2007. Poet, author, and artist Dixie Salazar will read from her book Blood Mysteries on Thursday March 8th in the Library's Galloway Reading Room. Also, The Library recently announced the 2007 Warrior Book Contest. This is an opportunity for students to earn cash in suppo rt of their personal book collection by simply sharing the significance and substance of their collections. This display details these happenings and highlights your University Library's dedication to supporting events on campus that enrich the learning experience. More information and details regarding these events will be available via the Library's homepage. Gold Fever (January, 2007) A display of images, books, maps and artifacts relating to gold; with an emphas is on gold mining in California. The display also includes excerpts from the 1848 Official Report on the Gold Mines by Colonel R ichard Barnes Mason. University Library Collections and Services (January, 2007) The University Library offers an array of collections and services. This display highlights some of the unique resources available to you through your University Library. Sex and Sexuality (November, 2006) Since its release in 1972, the book The Joy of Sex has sold almost ten million copies. This interesting fact suppo rts the notion that there exists a prevalent and sustained interest in exploring human sexuality. The materials in this display illustrate the fact that one can pursue scholarly or informational interests in sex and sexuality via materials available from the University Library. Armistice Day, November 11th. (November 2006) Officially changed to Veteran~Rs Day in 1954, Armistice Day came into being at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 when the fighting of the "Great War" ceased. This display contains: photographs of weapons used for the first time (machine guns, tanks, airplanes, mustard gas); a map of th e Western Front, 1918; a perfume bottle that was a gift to an American nurse in 1918 France; and library books to illustrate the lasting impact of World War I. Cowboys of the early 1900s (November, 2006 - Galloway Reading Room). A display of books and stereographs (photographs) of cowboys at work and performing in a rodeo held in Soldier Field during the 1933-34 Chicago World's Fair. Some of the cowbo ys depicted worked in Hawaii where they "herded" swimming cattle out to waiting ships. The stereographs are part of a collection in the Library's Special Collections. Golden State Politics (October, 2006) The campaigns that have come to define the November 2006 election in California bring to mind research exploring politics and gov ernment in the Golden State. This display highlights a few examples of the scholarship available from your University Library. Mexican Independence & Politics (September, 2006) September 16th marks the anniversary of Mexican independence. This year's anniversary will be observed alongside Mexico's attempt to resolve its own presidential election controversy. This display illustrates the idea that with the Library's resources one can explore the evolution of Mexican independence as well as its current political culture. Remembering September 11... 5 Years Later (September, 2006) A display of photographs, books, quotations and a timeline of events surrounding the attacks of September 11. Summer Reading Program (August, 2006) When the Emperor was Divine, a novel by Julie Otsuka. This Summer Reading Program selection describes the experiences of Japanese-Americans detained in internment camps during World War II. The San Joaquin Valley in Literature (Summer, 2006) The works in this display highlight descriptions of the Central Valley in literature, including the titles by Kerouac, Garder, Soto, Saroyan and Norris. Yosemite and John Muir (Summer, 2006) Pictorial, scholarly, and historic works on the famous naturalist and the valley he lobbied to protect.
